Our bodies are wired to heal. If you get a cut on your finger, you may notice in a few days that the cut is no longer there. Our minds and brains are also wired toward healing by arriving at adaptive conclusions of our experiences. However, when we experience a disturbing event, our natural healing process can be blocked by the trauma and emotional wounds can fester without the ability to process what has happened in a needed way. The process of EMDR helps a person’s natural ability to heal by providing a safe and effective way to process triggering memories contributing to current pain and dysfunction.

I have gone through rigorous training and consultation and am a certified EMDR practitioner through the EMDR International Association. If you’d like more information on EMDR, you can find it here or here. Many people think EMDR is simply a body based technique to treat trauma. Rather, it is a whole counseling approach with eight distinct phases of treatment, and combines many of the major psychological orientations–psychodynamic therapy, behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, and experiential therapies–in it’s approach.

When appropriate, I am able to offer the processing stages of EMDR via telehealth therapy. It is of utmost importance to me to appropriately assess a client’s level of readiness, current skills, and support system before doing so.
